18th Annual Skate for the Roses Tournament

January 21-24, 2021

Tournament Rules

  1. Standings will be kept online at https://www.stillwaterhockey.net/page/show/12213-girls-skate-for-the-roses
  2. USA Hockey registered officials will be used for each game.
  3. Certified medical attendants will be provided for each game.
  4. All games will be played under USA Hockey rules as modified by MN Hockey.
  5. District 2 teams must adhere to District 2 rules.
  6. All games will be played at St. Croix Valley Rec. Center, Lily Lake Ice Arena, or Somerset Ice Arena.
  7. Official team roster and Consent to Treat forms must be present at team check in.
  8. Gate fees for the Tournament were included in the registration fee, no fee for fans.
  9. A USA Hockey Roster and all USA Hockey required paperwork must be presented to the tournament officials prior to your first scheduled game.
  10. The Stillwater Area Hockey Association and any of its affiliates assume no liability for personal injury to any participants during the tournament.
  11. All decisions made by the officials during the game are final!
  12. Home teams wear light jerseys and visiting teams wear dark jerseys

  14. Due to COVID-19, Minnesota Hockey has decided to eliminate all in-game resurfacing.  Re-surfacing will only take place before the start of each game.
  15. Due to COVID-19, EACH TEAM WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE ONE MASKED VOLUNTEER WORK THEIR TEAMS PENALTY BOX.

Game Length

  • U10 A&B 12 minute stop time periods
  • U12 A&B 13 minute stop time periods
  • U15 A&B 15 minute stop time periods
  1. 4-minute warmup before games and one-minute rest between periods 
  2. Running time will be applied in the third period if there is a goal differential of 5 or more, the clock will only stop for injuries.  Should the difference go below 5, the clock returns to stop time.
  3. 3 coaches allowed on the bench during the game

Penalties

*If a player receives a fighting or match penalty, they will not be allowed to play in any remaining tournament games. 

 *If a player receives a game misconduct penalty, they will be suspended for the next tournament game.  

Bracket Play (U10)

  • Each team shall be allotted one 1-minute timeout per game.
  • In case of a tie, teams will play one 5-minute sudden death running time period.  
  • Overtime will be played at 4-on-4 on-ice numerical strength.
  • Teams shall switch ends at the beginning of the overtime period (long-change in effect)
  • If the game remains tied at the conclusion of overtime, a 3-player shootout will ensue.
    • The home team has the option to shoot first or second 
    • Teams will defend the same net they defended in the 3rd period.
    • If still tied after the initial 3 shooters, the shootout will revert to sudden death until a winner is determined.
    • All players on a team must shoot once before a player takes a second shot
    • Players serving a penalty at the conclusion of OT are not eligible to participate in the shootout as per USA Hockey 

Pool Play (U12 AND U15)

  • 8 teams split into 2 pools of 4 teams.  Each team will play 3 pool games.
  • Teams receive 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss.
  • NO OVERTIME IN POOL PLAY.
  • NO TIMEOUTS IN POOL PLAY.
  • HARD STOP FOR ALL SCHEDULED POOL PLAY... At the completion of your scheduled ice time, the zamboni doors will open regardless of remaining time on the game clock.
  • The winners (most points) of each pool will play for the championship and the 2nd place teams in each pool will play for third place.  The remaining teams will play in place games.  In the event teams have an equal amount of points following pool play Tie Breakers will be figured out in the following manner:
  1. Head to Head 
  2. Fewest goals allowed
  3. Goal differential (5 goal max per game)
  4. Total goals scored
  5. Fewest penalty minutes
  6. Coin flip

Playoff Round (U12 & U15)

  • The playoff round follows the conclusion of pool play.
  • Teams will play games in the playoff round based on pool rankings.
  • Teams will be seeded or ranked in the playoff round by the most points with the tie-breaker criteria for pool rankings utilized for ties.
  • The number 1 seeds from each pool will play for the championship. The number 2 seeds from each pool will play for third place.  The number 3 seeds will play for the 5th place and the number 4 seeds will play for 7th place.
  • Each team shall be allotted one 1-minute timeout per game.
  • OVERTIME WILL BE USED IN ALL  1ST AND 3RD PLACE GAMES ON SUNDAY.
    • Overtime rules will follow those listed under bracket play above.
    • If the game remains tied after overtime a shootout will ensue.
      • Shootout will follow the format listed under bracket play above until a winner is determined.
  • NO OVERTIME WILL BE USED IN 5TH OR 7TH PLACE GAMES ON SUNDAY
    • Ties will be ties
    • HARD STOP rule will apply to 5th and 7th place games on Sunday… At the completion of your scheduled ice time, the zamboni doors will open regardless of remaining time on the game clock.

ARENA RULES COVID-19 – BRIEF OVERVIEW

  • Masks are required for all players, coaches and spectators 5 years of age and older
  • Dryland activities, including warmups, inside the arena are not allowed.
  • Goalies will be allowed to enter the arena 15 minutes before scheduled game time and must come ½ dressed with breezers on… goalie equipment bags are allowed
  • Skaters and coaches will be allowed to enter the arena 10 minutes before scheduled game time and must arrive wearing all equipment except for helmets, gloves, and skates… a small bag to carry a water bottle, skates, gloves and helmet will be allowed.  Full size equipment bags will NOT be allowed for skaters.
  • Players are required to bring their own filled water bottles as the water fountains will NOT be accessible.
  • Players and coaches are to leave the building within 10 minutes of the conclusion of the game.
  • Coaches or other responsible adults should remain until all players are safe and removed from the premises.
  • Each player is allowed 2 spectators, siblings who are unable to remain home alone do NOT count towards the 2 spectators.
  • Spectators will be allowed to enter the arena AT GAME TIME.
  • Spectators are NOT to watch games from any arena lobby; please sit in the arena bleachers, maintaining six feet of social distancing
  • Spectators must exit the building immediately after the game, do not congregate in the lobby areas… and wait for your player in the parking lot.

 

Tournament Conduct

All players, coaches, and spectators are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship.  Cheer on your teams but be respectful of the officials and the other teams and their fans.  Coaches will be held responsible by the referees for the behavior of their fans.  Tournament officials will be monitoring each game.  Spectator behavior complaints should be made to tournament officials.  Tournament headquarters is located in the lobby of the St. Croix Rec. Center.  Any complaints about officiating must be initiated by the head coach of the team only and will be referred to District 2.  Tournament officials will provide a copy of the process to any head coach who wishes to proceed with a complaint.  Noisemakers are banned (i.e., cow bells, horns, whistles, clappers, etc.)
