New to Hockey

New to Hockey? Start here!

Trying out a new sport can be overwhelming. We have put together a number of resources to help guide you through what it's like to play hockey with Bemidji Youth Hockey Association (BYHA).

Each fall during September we also offer a Mini Lumberjacks program for kids ages 5-8 who have never played before.

For the regular season (starts late October-early November), typically for kids ages 8 and under you will be a part of the mite program. This is broken out into 6U/8U on the girls side, Termites/Mite 1/Mite 2 on the boys side. Girls can play in the boys program if they choose.

Links to the Minnesota Hockey webpage are found in the sections below and are full of information to help you learn both the game of hockey and how it's structured in Minnesota.

Still want to know more about the specific levels at BYHA, the time commitment, and how the season is set up? Check out our FAQ section for more information.

Team Level Classifications

Player age eligibility is set by Minnesota Hockey.

BYHA teams are typically based on age and gender. Skill level may also be a factor for ages 5-8.

The number of teams within each level depends on the number of players and may vary slightly each season.
