Player Development Recommendations for Associations by Burggraf Skating- Bemidji

"Systems kill development and creativity. Every time you introduce a system you are taking away the player's development and his/her creativity." Ron Wilson, former NHL coach, US National team coach, college hockey player.

1. Every coach Mite-Bantam, must work on individual skating, puck control, and shooting for the first 30 minutes of every practice. Every player has a puck on their stick for a minimum 30 minutes.

2. Use the second half of practice on team skills focusing on skating and puck control and passing. Save the last 15 minutes or so for scrimmage, 5 on 5, 4 on 4 or 3 on 3 with the focus on puck control and making it fun.

3. Schedule 3 practices per week. This is a must. Combine or share the ice with another team. Don't settle for anything less when you commit to develop skills. If you are going to play "Dump and Chase" then just show up for games.

4. Focus on skating and puck control and reward that behavior.  Always reward what you want your players to achieve! It could be just a few words; "Good Job" " well done" " that's the way."  A thumbs up, a smile, or a pat on the shin!

5. Do the players a favor and don't teach systems except when the other team is controlling the puck in your zone. Your job as a youth coach is to help each player develop to his or her full potential. If you do that, your team will win more than their share of games in the process.

6. Develop a strong season long in-house program at the 10U, Squirt level. Allow all players to develop and provide families with an alternative to expensive team travel.

7. Be consistent year in year out with player development by developing a Successful Feeding Program (SFP).  Coaches at every level must be reading from the same development plan and must be consistent in what is being taught and how it is being taught to players as they progress from one level to the next.

8. Attend Burggraf Skating Clinics and Programs. To get exposed to professional coaches that care about every players improvement. By attending our programs, your son or daughter will be exposed to exclusive training that will benefit them as players and people!  Don't miss out on this valuable resource in your back yard!
