After spotting Roseau a 2-0 lead the Bemidji boys hockey team caught fire and blitzed the Rams 7-3 Saturday at the Community Arena.

Saturday’s triumph extended the Lumberjacks’ winning streak to seven games and upped the overall record to 14-1-1. Roseau fell to 7-7.

“We were reacting a little slowly in the first period but we picked it up in the second and by the third period we were clicking,” said BHS coach Wade Chiodo. “It was a heck of a third period. The kids were flying.”

As good teams do Bemidji improved as the game continued. Roseau scored the lone goal of the first period on a tip-in at 6:57 and the Rams took a 2-0 lead with a power-play tally 2:41 into the second.

But from that moment on the Lumberjacks were in control.

Steve Heller drew the Jacks within 2-1 when he took a perfect feed from Brady Devescovi at the Bemidji blue line, outraced the Roseau defense and beat Ram goalie Jared Strand on a breakaway at 7:45.

Less than three minutes later Easton Halbert banged home a rebound from just outside the right post to tie the game.

Roseau promptly answered that tally with its second power-play goal of the night but Max Hazelton evened the score at 12:07. John Forseth started the play by gaining control behind the Roseau net and the junior filtered a pass to Hazelton who was camped just outside the crease.

Hazleton fanned on his first attempt at jabbing the puck past Strand but he fared better on his second try.

The third period was all Bemidji as the Lumberjacks were flying and Roseau couldn’t keep up. The result was a four-goal period which met the approval of the large contingent of Bemidji fans who were in attendance.

Matt Serratore started the onslaught when he zipped home a rebound of Forseth’s shot at 2:08.

Jordan Heller lit the lamp at 7:25 and Hazelton notched his second of the game at 12:12 while the Jacks were enjoying a 5-on-3 man advantage.

Devescovi capped the scoring at 13:50 with help from Tyler Follis and Jordan Heller.

Jeremiah Graves finished with 25 saves while Strand stopped only 22 of Bemidji’s 29 shots.

The Lumberjacks have a week to prepare for their next outing which will be Friday against Brainerd at Nymore.
